Portugal 2-1 Croatia — The Snicko Controversy
This was the match that had everything. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first-ever World Cup knockout goal from the penalty spot, becoming the oldest player to start a knockout match at 41. But after being substituted in the 81st minute, he watched from the bench as Goncalo Ramos headed home a 94th-minute winner.
Then came the chaos. Croatia thought Josko Gvardiol had equalized deep into stoppage time — but the VAR intervened. Using Snickometer-style technology from the microchip inside the Adidas Trionda match ball, referees detected a faint touch from Igor Matanovic in the buildup, ruling the goal out for offside.
For 40-year-old Luka Modric, it was likely the end of his World Cup journey. For Ronaldo, his “last dance” continues — Portugal will face Spain in the last 16.
England 2-1 DR Congo — Kane to the Rescue
England were 15 minutes from a humiliating exit after Brian Cipenga gave DR Congo the lead. But captain Harry Kane produced two stunning finishes — a header from Anthony Gordon’s cross (75′) and a powerful strike on the turn (86′) — to turn the game around completely.
Thomas Tuchel’s side now faces the toughest test in world football: Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. The co-hosts have won all four matches so far, scoring eight goals and conceding none.
Spain 3-0 Austria — Oyarzabal Shines
Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice to take his tournament tally to four as Spain won a World Cup knockout match for the first time since the 2010 final. Pedro Porro added the third. Goalkeeper Unai Simon kept his fourth consecutive clean sheet.
Switzerland 2-0 Algeria — History in Vancouver
Goals from Breel Embolo (10′) and Dan Ndoye (46′) gave Switzerland their first World Cup knockout win since 1938. They’ll face the winner of Colombia vs Ghana in the last 16.
Belgium 3-2 Senegal — Miracle Comeback
Trailing 2-0 with four minutes left, Belgium staged a stunning revival. Romelu Lukaku sparked it in the 86th minute before Youri Tielemans scored twice in stoppage time — including a last-gasp penalty — to snatch victory.
USA 1-0 Bosnia — Balogun Hero & Heartbreak
Folarin Balogun scored and was sent off in the same game — the first player to do so in a World Cup knockout match since Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 final. Malik Tillman secured the win as the US recorded their first World Cup knockout victory since 2002.
