On Tuesday night at MetLife Stadium in New York, the French captain scored twice to lead France to a dominant 3-0 victory over Sweden in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 — and in the process, set yet another historic milestone.

Mbappe’s two goals took his World Cup knockout-stage tally to 10 goals — the most in World Cup history for knockout matches. We had to be perfect to win today, and even if we were, I’m not sure that would have been enough because of the quality of the opponent. It’s no disgrace to lose to France. They were the better team, they have incredible players.
Potter also praised France’s movement and chemistry:
They rotate with a lot of players, they come in different positions, they’re not static. When they have that quality and those movements, it’s tough to defend for 90 minutes.
What’s Next?
France will now face Paraguay in the Round of 16 on Saturday, July 4 at 5 PM ET in Philadelphia — fittingly on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, in the very city where it was signed.
Other Round of 32 matches are ongoing, with Mexico vs Ecuador delayed by an hour due to thunderstorms and lightning near the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
