What’s New in iOS 27 Photos?
Apple just dropped the iOS 27 developer beta at WWDC, and it comes with the most significant AI photo editing overhaul the iPhone Photos app has ever seen. We went hands-on with Clean Up 2.0, Extend, and Spatial Reframing — here’s what works, what’s weird, and whether you should care.
| Feature | What It Does | Apple Cloud AI? |
|---|---|---|
| Clean Up 2.0 | Remove photobombers, objects, and distractions | Optional cloud boost |
| Extend | Expand photo edges with AI-generated filler | Yes |
| Spatial Reframing | Reposition camera perspective of existing photo | Yes |
Clean Up 2.0 — Now Actually Useful
Last year’s Clean Up was a letdown. On-device models produced weird artifacts and often made photos look worse.
Clean Up 2.0 is different. By tapping into more powerful cloud-based models (similar to Google Pixel’s Magic Eraser), Apple’s tool now convincingly removes objects and fills in the background. It finally just works.
Extend — Cropping in Reverse
Ever framed a shot too tight? Extend lets you expand the edges of your photo, and AI paints in plausible filler. Apple has been conservative — it avoids editing people and limits how far you can extend. The catch: it can invent things that weren’t there.
Spatial Reframing — Ambitious but Flawed
This is the most impressive and most problematic feature. It lets you adjust the camera perspective of an existing photo as if you had moved when taking the shot. On faraway subjects with subtle adjustments, it’s eerily good. On close-ups and selfies, it falls into uncanny valley — the AI literally invented a person sitting next to Craig Federighi in one test.
